U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) released the following statement today after the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly confirmed Senator John Kerry as Secretary of State:

"John Kerry is an American patriot and a hardworking Senator, and I am confident that he will serve our nation skillfully as Secretary of State. The broad, bipartisan support for his nomination is a reflection of both his great qualifications and his ability to build relationships across political and idealogical boundaries. John Kerry has been a great representative for Massachusetts, and I am confident that he will be a great representative for the U.S. around the world. He has been a great friend and will be sorely missed in the Senate, but his decades of foreign policy and national security experience will serve him well in this new position."
